Traversing multiple fields and subfields, from Caribbean and Latin American studies to Marxist literary criticism to human rights, Philip’s research brings questions of resistance and struggle to bear on cultural and legal forms; theorizes and critically appraises alternative modes of being in the world; and addresses the intersections of law, politics, and culture. One of the overarching objectives of Philip’s research is the recuperation of hitherto marginalized, repressed, or neglected works, ideas, and histories. It is inspired by the conviction that the project of universal freedom might yet be radicalized, redeemed, and recuperated, and that our moral vision and political hopes be revitalized. Philip’s current book project, Worlding Law and Literature: A Materialist Critique and Reconstruction, has as its goal the reconstruction and reorientation of ‘Law and Literature’ along more globally inclusive and materialist lines.
